Local Snapshots
❤️ MLK Day of Service
Chattanooga is gearing up for its annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service on Monday, January 19, bringing neighbors together to honor Dr. King’s legacy through action.
Hundreds of volunteers will spread out across the city to support cleanup, beautification, organizing projects, and tree planting efforts that strengthen local neighborhoods. The City of Chattanooga is currently seeking both volunteers and project sites, with a focus on indoor projects when possible.
Service projects will take place from 9 AM to noon, followed by the MLK Day Parade at 1 PM at Miller Park.
🏗️ New Life for the Former County Jail
Plans are moving forward to transform the former Hamilton County Jail on Walnut Street into a film, music, and tech production hub that developers say could generate a billion-dollar economic impact over time.
The eight-story building has been vacant since 2021 and is now slated for private redevelopment by Urban Story Ventures. The project would include production space, music writing studios, data and tech infrastructure, residential suites for artists, and a 100-seat Bijou Auditorium.
The project would be privately funded, with construction potentially beginning within 18 months pending county approval.
🚀 New Partnership Aims to Bring More Businesses Downtown
River City Company has announced a new partnership with Retail Strategies aimed at attracting more retail and restaurant businesses to Downtown Chattanooga.
The collaboration brings national expertise in market analysis, real estate evaluation, and strategic recruitment to support River City Company’s goal of creating a vibrant, world-class downtown.
Retail Strategies will help identify market gaps, evaluate key commercial properties, and actively recruit businesses that fit downtown’s unique character. Leaders say the partnership will strengthen the economic, social, and cultural heart of the city by building a more diverse and thriving mix of shops and dining options for residents and visitors alike.
